What happened to our 9/11 surviving brothers & sisters?

As I review lesbians and breast cancer I see that pretty much all public or government funding stopped in 2001, thank you President Bush and 9/11 attacks. Which then gets me to wander off and wonder what happened to those strong lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered brothers and sisters who lost their loved ones? I recall quite a bit of publicity around these couples; then as everything in America does, it became less important to worry about. I mean they're gay, right? Why should Americans worry about them? I am sure those LGBT members who died were less American, right?

Obviously, I say all of this with much sarcasm, but honestly what happened to the ones left behind? Did they lose their homes? Their jobs? Their children that weren't biologically theirs? Did they have to fight the insurance companies? The government? To prove without a marriage license their partner died in this horrific event?

This is just one more reason we need solidarity behind making gay marriage/civil union available nationally. State by state is great, but while we wait for everyone to get on board the LGBT community stays behind by not receiving the same benefits as our heterosexual counterparts. Because gay marriage or civil union, whatever the heck you want to call it I really don't care, isn't legalized we have less rights than the straights! I am sure those survivors of those lost LGBT members would have appreciated receiving their partner's social security in trying to save their homes, feed their children or just to get by - but they didn't and that is a sin and should be overturned.

I will provide more on this topic as I have written GMA requesting a follow up story on these couples that were brave enough to come out and share their stories when that is all they had because our government cannot provide them (us) equal rights.
