This past weekend, a nationwide protest against California's Proposition 8 took place. Proposition 8 was the ballot initiative that eliminated the right to marry for same-sex couples. After November 4, when 52% of California voters supported Proposition 8, a massive grassroots campaign called Join the Impact gained momentum and protests were organized in hundreds of cities and all 50 states.
From a health perspective, the Gay and Lesbian Medical Assocation (GLMA) supports marriage rights for same-sex couples as "the health and well-being of LGBT people and their families is affected by their right to marry and by the denial of that right." In fact, it is notable that most major healthcare organizations have endorsed marriage equality.
I attended Chicago's protest with thousands of other LGBT folk and allies.
