The Annual Hot 100 list: Women vote for Other women as this year’s top Hotties

Afterellen.com recently released the results of this year’s Annual Hot 100. This is supposed to be a chance for lesbian/bi women to express what, or who, they find attractive. Since, and I quote from the site, “our voice is largely missing from mainstream, heterocentric pop culture.”

I admit, I found this idea enticing. Who wouldn’t enjoy looking at a list of 100 beautiful and hot women? And I was pleased to see some of my favorite queer and not-so-queer hotties included in the top 100 (I guess other queers have some of the same crushes as me…). But, as I scrolled down the list I started getting kind of frustrated and bored. Everyone started looking the same to me! And I felt like I’d already seen this list countless times before.

The problem is that, barring a few exceptions, the list looked like every other top 100 hot list that’s out there.

Out of the top 100 hot women voted on by women, not a single one, as far as I could tell, was a “plus” size woman. They were all pretty much thin and skinny. Seriously people, there are plenty of hot, bigger women in movies, TV and music that should be on this list. What does this say about the preferences of women in our community? Are we as hung up on size and body type as the rest of the (not-queer) world?

And even more blaring, there was a serious lack of butch women or androgynous women or genderqueer women on the list. With the exception of a few (like Rachel Maddow and Tegan And Sara), I didn’t see anyone on this list who wasn’t a femme/feminine/girly type. I know that when I see some genderfucking going on in movies or TV or in a band, I think it’s really hot. Where is our butch/tranny/genderqueer/androgynous top 100 list? I want to vote on that. Mostly, I want to vote on anything that is not going to perpetuate the idea that a hot woman only equals a thin, white, feminine beauty.

So, sure, I enjoyed looking at the top 100 list, seeing my favorite cuties looking hot as ever, but I couldn’t help wonder, wouldn’t it be nice to have a different kind of list - one that talks about what turns us on vs. labeling certain people hotter than other?

It could be the sexy gap between her teeth, or the soft, soft, softness of a big body wrapped around you, or the mystery of an androgynous hottie who makes you look twice as they walk down the street. This would be a great list. And perhaps then we could celebrate all the things we love about queer bodies – without giving in to the capitalistic and heterocentric model of judging people’s beauty relative to others.

So, what are your top 100?

I'm VERY surprised Beth Ditto didn't make the list. But maybe with The Gossip's new album coming out we'll see her on next year's list.
